"After I had
left A&M, in ’78, I returned to Italy, and I called RCA, as it
used to be known, and wanted to know if they would help me make another
album. They said they would be in touch shortly, and a few days
later, I received a call from Robert Summers, who at the time was
President of RCA records. He asked me what I had in mind, and if I was
coming to the states any time soon. I was due to tour in about 2
months, and he said they would cover my expenses in NY, so they could
hear what I had in the way of material. When I arrived there,
Warren Schatz was the head of A&R, and I played he and Bob the tunes,
and they agreed to give me the money to produce “Transcendence”

"I
brought it in under budget, and the day before it was due to be
released, RCA promoted Bob Summers to CEO of RCA overall, and a
man named Bob Fead came in and promptly fired the entire RCA record
staff in the building in NY. In the years that have past, those people
have all proclaimed that “Transcendence”, was the singularly most
beautiful work to have come out of that building in the last 10
years. I still consider it one of my most favorite works." Shawn
